Kokedama FAQ's
What is a Kokedama?
A Kokedama is a decorative indoor plant design that has a ball of natural mosses and fibres encased around a plants’ roots in place of a pot. Originating in Japan, Kokedama are named after their material and shape with ‘Koke’ translating to Moss and ‘Dama’ meaning Ball. Kokedama feature a twine wrapping which helps form the rounded ball shape, secures the materials and plant roots inside, as well as provide an attractive decorative feature.
What plants are suitable for a Kokedama?
Most indoor houseplants are suitable to be made into a Kokedama. Popular Kokedama plants include Monstera, Peace Lily, Pothos varieties, Mini Umbrella Trees, Ficus, and some succulents.
How do you display a Kokedama?
Kokedama can be displayed in your home or office by either suspending in a plant hanger or sitting on a dish of stones. This ensures adequate airflow around the Kokedama ball. Each Little Green World Kokedama includes a dish and stones. Macrame plant hangers are available for separate purchase.
How do you care for a Kokedama?
On average, your Kokedama will require watering once every 1-3 weeks. This will vary depending on the size of the Kokedama, the individual plant requirements, and the temperature/ conditions in your home.
The easiest way to tell if you need to water your Kokedama is by its weight. When full of water, a Kokedama will feel quite heavy, and the ball may also feel slightly spongey when squeezed.
When your Kokedama has used up its water, it will feel light, dry, and firm. Your plant can also tell you it is thirsty by looking a bit sad and limp. You can water your Kokedama from the top, from the bottom, or alternate between both methods.
Trim back plant as needed. Depending on the plant, you may be able to propagate your cuttings in soil or water to create new plants!
A Kokedama info care guide is provided with every purchase and to each workshop participant. If you require additional support, you can contact Caz on the Little Green World Albury Facebook page, or by emailing littlegreenworldau@gmail.com, or by SMS 0478110107
How do you water a Kokedama?
To top water: gently scuff up the soil around the plant stems, slowly pour water over the soil at the same rate that it is being absorbed, continue to water until the Kokedama is heavy/ water drips out base. This method keeps the twine wrapping intact for longer.
To bottom water: place your Kokedama in a bowl, fill bowl with water until level reaches half the height of the Kokedama ball, wait until kokedama absorbs water, repeat until the ball ceases absorbing water. Gently squeeze out excess water and place on drying rack to drip dry before replacing on display.
Make sure to let your Kokedama dry out completely before watering again to prevent overwatering.
How long does a Kokedama last?
Until the twines break or until the plant outgrows its Kokedama. This is usually 1-2 years.
This is because:
1. Thriving happy plants will naturally grow larger over time
2. Kokedama twines are made from natural materials which are regularly exposed to water.
You can extend the life of your Kokedama by alternating between top and bottom watering techniques and by providing adequate airflow around the Kokedama.
Little Green World can assist to rewrap your Kokedama or transfer your plant into a larger Kokedama or pot (charges apply).
